The Best Practice of "The Designer Accord"

These are some of the practices i found from "The Designer Accord" related to the graphic design.

Eco-Effectiveness: "...if you 're doing the wrong thing, it might be pernicious because it perpetuates the wrong system with the erroneous thought that things are getting better. "

"Modern industrial culture doesn’t seem to have principles, except something like: “If brute force isn’t working, you are not using enough of it.” While its goals are unclear, its de facto goal appears to be to create ecological and human tragedy."
So,"If you play a game, you have to have a clear goal; in chess, you’re going to take a king. So we have an end game in mind because without this strategy becomes meaningless. "

"We use this triangle known as the Sierpinski gasket, or fractal tile, to be able to navigate the relationships between ecology, equity, and economy. It’s a fractal way of looking at the entire universe that’s self-similar. Cost, performance, and aesthetics meet Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness!"

Wastes = Food

The truth.

To Me
The term of "Technical Nutrition" means we actually can compare the work flow of footprint in industry or say wastes with Agriculture's production process or even Design process.
The key process is "Nutritious" need to be diverse or "digest" in order to reproduce and "fertilize" the new resources.
The point is all the industry processes are relay on the nature fertilization to provide new energy which can be consumed for us. Even it seems endless like solar energy. However, if our consumption works beyond and those
nature fertilization failed to catch up, the imbalance appears.
In that way, it can be say that we still just know how to eat apple but know nothing on how it grows.

Why we need an ACCORD?

We need an accord, which can let every designer work for one direction to plan and provide a future environment, which safe and sustainable.

Ideas from relevant resources>

>Between generation and with in generation

>Many designers come from different asset, come together to switch the light of future. The switchers are all in our hands,. Whether we gonna to turn the environmental consideration off or not depends on our each tiny decision.

>Invention of the electricity-light
>NOKIA connect people and their open screen, big hand and little hand.

>However, we are just designers have to works with others social roles. We just humbled and humiliate to provide some designs to judge by the God and our clients. But our future generation would be the last judge our outcomes.

So what about a baby bed or chair?

We actually can copy what those production designers work.
Remember the interesting idea card say:” Imagine you are an engineer. ”

>Microsoft Advertise, the original photo plus the imaginative drawings.

I like it, so why don’t we draw some design decision for our future baby bed?

Would you plus a wheel? An engine? What about a big screen?
What kind of martial will be use on this? Do they recyclable? What kind of energy will it be? What kind of toy would be suitable? Baby needs a flower, what kind of plant would be suit? What kind of milk? And bio-tech would be sustainable? What about the whole life-span of this baby bed? For our future baby they might need to learn our tech at very early age. So, what kind of TV program would be provide? Oh, the cost of the baby chair, the economy, do we need all this parts for our future baby’s bed? Would it be sustainable?

"Cause and Effects"

cause marketing is set to become the third wave of sponsorship

by Scott Lyall, corporate relations manager of the WWF

With the convergence of philanthropy and sponsorship, there has been a wave of interest in "cause"marketing.

Cause marketing combines the best elements of traditional marketing with the well established concept of corporate social responsibility.

It is a mutual benefit partnership between company and cause.

eg:WWF(World Wide Fund For Nature)

"The future isn't cheque book philanthropy. It is a marriage of corporate marketing and socail responsibility"
(Journal of Consumer Research Mar3 1993)

"Unlike advertising in the main media, sponsorship doesn't confront the consumer with a proposition, but rather it comes alongside, like a friend, because the sponsor is supporting something which the consumer wants supported.(Tony Wheeler,Marketing June 1992)

Goverment agencies see sponsorship as a way of replacing declining government funding , but may not yet have fully explored the affect this may have on the independence of the bureaucracy.

Some corporations are setting up their own foundations to be the beneficiariew of their cause marketing activities.

Cause organisations are supplementing the moral power of their members and the commercial value of their name or logo. Once they fully realise the advantages of doing so responsibly there will be no going back to "cap in hand" philanthropy.

Throughts from "Licensing versus eco-labelling"

THE ENVIRONMENTAL
DILEMMA

At 70's, "Consumer advocacy groups helped create boycotts of harmful or wasteful products and demanded more informative descriptions of products on pack."

Triped in trouble "...include vague phrases such as 'environmentally friendly' or use of 'recyclable' on products for which there is no market for the recyclate"

Because,"An eco-labelling or environmental certification scheme differs from a license"

So,"by acting as an eco-label would not confer competitive advantage"

It is shocking to know that in London citizen will be charged on what they throw. See the detail.

RECYCLING in my city does not work in that way. As it is in early 90's, resources in china are still be treat as precious. In my memory, our parents had to return the glass bottles of the milk delivered on each morning. In that way, they can had a discount for booking next month. Similarly, at that time or even till now, the price of the soft drink are different. It is cheaper in some of the "milk bar" if customer promise to returned the bottles for recycling. As it might involving the risk in this kind of retailing business, it becomes faded and being taken place by another way which is also an very old traditional way, the recyclers. They actually are someone whose livelihood depended on recycling business. They would happy to give you some money accounting on the weight of the bottles; papers or Aluminum. Those time, i still remember they even accepted some electrical devices. Most of my old generation in Shanghai still remember each time on Sunday Morning there must be fun to see people carry on dozens of newspapers at the road side waiting for recycling and just for little pocket money.
But does this that simple? I assume that is kind of philosophy, only when people understand the meaning of being "hungry" not only on food and living must.

To me, I understand and respect that attitude of living. However, old time has passed, the city of Shanghai suddenly become wealthy. No body understand but had to accept the old recycle way not works anymore, simply because no body want to pay for the recycling. However recycling as a business itself still can make you rich in Shanghai. New country side people come to the city and pick the business and become rich. The reason is simple, wasts are resources(Macao,China, in English. Mainly it is the same to other cities in China). And resources are money. When you collecting the resources without paying anything, what will happen if you sell them?

So my question is:
Pay for the wast or give profit from saving?

PP: As long as I know there is a new hot line for recycling in Shanghai(form Shanghai Daily, leading English Newspaper in Shanghai), which might be consider as a "Design".

"Sustainability by Design", Chapter Three

by
Walker, Stuart, 1955-

"A type of development that would enable us to meet our present needs in ways that would not jeopardize the potential of future generation to meet their needs"

----chapter3: sustainable development in context

Sustainable development be describe as an "emergence idea", it is "important", but still limited and full of "myth"

It contain three interrelate areas:

1.environmental stewardship
2.social equity and justice
3.economic issues

A. about the "the evolution of a contemporary myth"

modern, secularized education/ design/ trend
(metaphorical language like what like to be)

Walker address the important of the "message" also comes form the ancient "myth". He seems intended that some organic ideas were come from ancient experience which like the religion. "many of the concerns remain that were traditionally addressed by religion". But now the "myth" is secularized one which, however, on point of his view is "about taking on the task of learning how to live in the world".

However, I found that our technology development is a real myth to ourselves in the future. Because, we don't clear where we will be on about developing the technicals which seems to benefit to us in a short term. Since, most of us accounting on the future developing of those advance technology to save our life. With out choice and be blinded , we are like gambling and learn on what our scientists are doing now. But, for example, does the solar energy really can achieve sustainable, or might case more side effects and need more costs to solve them? It satirized that, some of us found, when some 'problems' seems been solved, more and more 'problems' occur.

B. about Loss

"Another related aspect of Sustainable Development is its implicit sense of loss: a loss of a perfect state, of innocence and harmony...a constant theme through out history."

Do not let the messages being unheeded . And so it become the awareness."Furthermore, the sustainable 'myth' tell us that if the message goes unheeded and we fail to alter our behaviors we will be the the cause of our own destruction"

Sarcastically. It is the in depth of the fear and worrier of the future generations driving ourself to advocate sustainable development instead of the analysis and and research in detail. Walker argued that "Obviously, this statement is an assumption and a warning, but it is not a proven fact and it is anything but a 'simple truth'. (present generation is the last one that can save the Earth.)" However as this message is both ethical and environmental, it takes time to be accept for all of us.

If we spread an information with out digestions and truly luck of understanding, "the inconvenient truth " will be nothing but a war propaganda. To avoid this, i personally feel the necessity to build a global community.Like "the designer accord" is a good approach. However, considering the different language and culture background, the designers are having the responsibility to let the graphical language, the only know universal language to be accessible about the idea of sustainability.

>>>we need to know more about what is the history of sustainable development

items that mentioned as a list will coming soon.....................

Notes of "Design for Service"

Research, patterns and observation

by Richard Buchanan Keynote

FOUR boundaries differ our designers

1.Graphic/Information Design
Do Communication - Do Action

2.Industrial Design
Do Userabality - Do Artifacts

3.System Design
Apply system environment - Organize system environment

4.Design Management
Service Design - Management

Key Terms

- see the "whole"
- to "visualize"- effective, meaningful communication
- "Embodiment", tangibilities

"A definition of Design itself... Precisely because of the cross-overs and the boundary ambiguities."

It seems indicated that:
The result of design- can be something we could thump - can be "experience"

AIGA "experience design become too soft and malleable"

George Nelson:"Design, don't get too pretentious. We have a humble occupation. We serve people. On the order of Jesus Christ, philosophers, designers are low down. All we do is serve."

"It helps us to think about some things. And also to look at an area where designers have neglected their responsibilities (or their capabilities). Namely these core services. I want to make a special case though, for the Internet. And let that hang for a little while longer. "

the design pyramid
--Strategies are "intellectual and practical arts"
---Methods
----techniques

"Collective conversation. Collaboration.Participation. Dialectic is emerging."

Rhetoric and Dialectic. Art of communication.
"pragmatic, skeptical, asking questions about working together."
"sometimes out loud,sometimes just hinted"
"Judge us as you will, by the consistency. Values are central."
"How much control we may retain?"

"Service design is about the equitable distribution of resources and tools to make decisions."

"I did it because design is a discipline that everybody can participate in. Everyone is affected by, and if we do it right, we increase human’s access to their own rights. Economic, cultural and social rights. That’s that special place that I mentioned for the Internet."

Why we need another game to tell us how to behave for sustainability

This semester all my courses related to a save issue,"Sustainable Design". I have been puzzled at first. Cause my postgraduate program called Multimedia Design and I am come form game animator background. The term of "Design" here is not in how to practice but how to be practicing, which means telling the way to start or adjust design practice in stead of giving detail. Frankly, I still feel hard to follow this idea even this is my third semester.

But the good side of these courses might provide me a good opportunity to find a good way to approaching my goal, doing Serious Games.

It almost two weeks after attending the lectures and I felt I have been moved. Like I have always known and believe that everything have the start and end with the difference only on their life span, which is depending on good or bad managements.

Thanks to "The Sustainable by Design"; "Massive Change" and "An Inconvenient Truth".
"Sustainability" here becomes the emergency to our designers.

Announced as the only university assigned the "The Designers Accord", our school tend to be the lead in this area.

Small action can make a big difference, like I believed. If it needs to be change ,it needs actions.
There are few steps between real change and taking actions. The Accord is like somebody say "I swear that I will quite smoking" but without contentious actions it can't be achieved.

Yesterday, we required to mapping the infos we found and draw it on an A1 paper. It has been found the difficulty is not affluent the infos but how to organize them. I suggest we should understand how people start to agree and sign the Accord as well as how the Kyoto Accord start.

Meanwhile, I have start look at how game designers can response. There is some good example here. And some focus on climate change. By the end of this week, I need to find more "Real Design" for the issue of sustainability and give a short list.
